The 32-year-old, who was an unused substitute in last night's 2-0 win over St Mirren, made the shock statement on social media this afternoon.

Stevenson stated: "It is with a sad heart but I feel the time is right to call time on my professional career."

The decision appears to have come out of the blue for the veteran striker, who made national headlines only last week when he played a full 90 minutes in goals after injury left the Kirkcaldy side without any fit goalkeepers.

Raith have not yet confirmed the striker's statement, and the club refused to comment when contacted by the FFP.

Stevenson has made nine appearances for Raith since moving on a free transfer from Dumbarton in January, scoring once in a recent 1-1 draw against Hibernian.

His previous clubs include St Johnstone, Ayr United, Hearts, Ipswich Town and Partick Thistle.
