Ross Matthews signs contract extension at Raith Rovers

The 25-year-old put pen to paper at Stark’s Park this week to extend his current contract, which was to end this summer, until the climax of the 2023/24 season.

Matthews has appeared 13 times this season as Raith have made their impressive return to the Championship, chipping in with three goals from the centre of the pitch.

In total since making his debut he has played 209 times for the club.

Speaking to Raith TV, Matthews said he was “absolutely delighted” to extend his stay in Kirkcaldy.

"This season and last is the most I’ve ever enjoyed my football,” he said, “I’m delighted to sign for another three years with this great club.

"It’s rare at a club this size to get a three-year deal and I’m just very grateful.”

Matthews said working with Raith’s management team played a big part in his decision to sign.

"I’ve really enjoyed working with Smudger [assistant boss Paul Smith] and the gaffer [John McGlynn] and I’ve seen myself improving and obviously I want that to continue,” he said.

"I want to improve in every game, I don’t want to stand still. The gaffer and Smudger's attention to detail has them looking at every team, looking at us individually and pointing out areas where you can improve your game.

“That’s something I’m keen to do.”

Over the next three years of his contract Matthews says he’s aiming to push the club towards success.

"I don't want us just to be a mid-table Championship club,” he says, “I want us to be pushing for promotion and I want to be part of that team.

“This season some people expected us no to stay up and be relegated but I think we’ve built a good squad here, another reason that I want to be part of it.

"I think we have a chance to do something special.”

Manager McGlynn said Matthews’ signing was a significant step forward for the club.

"Ross has continued to improve in the last two years and we see him as a player who can continue to improve and take us to the next level,” he said.

"He has shown his commitment to the club and by signing until the summer of 2024.

"I’m delighted to be working with Ross over this period.”
