St Andrews Utd 2-0 Ormiston

St Andrews United began the delayed 2020/21 season by securing a hard-fought win over a stuffy Ormiston side, writes Donald Gellatly.

United took the lead in the sixth minute when a Ryan O’Connor clearance was helped into Kyle Wilson’s path by Jason Penman and the striker calmly found the bottom right-hand corner of Kieran Beveridge’s net.

Wilson blazed the ball over the portacabins following the next corner kick but he went closer moments later when Beveridge failed to hold a well-struck shot.

However, the goalie did well to recover and he made a brave save as Hart sought to convert the rebound from close-range.

The last action of the first half saw Saints’ goalkeeper Connor Shaw smother a shot from distance and he repeated that feat at the start of the second period despite a late call for offside coming from the home defence.

Ormiston’s Sean Ballard forced Shaw into making another routine save after the St Andrews United defence failed to deal with a long ball yet the big ‘keeper never looked worried all afternoon.

The same could not be said of Beveridge as Hart’s header flew just over the bar then the Ormiston stopper was beaten for a second time in the 73rd minute.

Penman, Hart and Douglas Crowe exchanged neat passes in midfield before Wilson raced through the inside left channel, en route to blasting his second goal of the contest high into the visitors’ net.

Owen Andrew almost added a third in the dying minutes when he narrowly failed to convert a great cross by substitute Jake Grady but the wasted chances did not cost the boys in black on this occasion.

In summary, both teams struggled to pass the ball throughout a scrappy match yet St Andrews United deserved to claim all three points as a result of possessing slightly more quality in attack.

This weekend Saints travel to Edinburgh South.
