Instead of giving a penalty, the referee booked the Tayport man for simulation much to the consternation of the home contingent.

The next major incident was the 28th minute dismissal of Tayport player-boss, John Ovenstone, for a tackle which was deemed to be dangerous.

That left the hosts down to ten men with more than an hour to play but the remaining players battled valiantly and grew in confidence as the game wore on.

‘Keeper Gavin Sorley made one important stop towards the end of the half when he kept out West End’s Andy Walls while Dale Reid had a couple of opportunities at the other end as the half finished goalless.

Tayport had the better of the second half.

Jamie Mackie came mighty close with a free kick from the corner of the box then David Geekie fired a dangerous ball across the face of goal.

On 64 minutes, ‘Port notched what proved to be the winner.

Geekie found Dale Reid with a high ball and, from wide on the right, he unleashed a screamer beyond ‘keeper Burns and into the far corner of the net.

Thereafter, West End would increase the pressure on the home defence, but the 10 men held firm and could have added to their tally.
