Tayport 2-0 Carnoustie Panmure

Tayport produced a rock solid performance on the Canniepairt last Saturday to oust Super League Carnoustie Panmure from the inter-regional GA Engineering Cup and set up a semi-final meeting with Kirrie Thistle.

The closest there was to a goal in the first half was an Alan Tulleth effort from a tight angle which crashed against the woodwork.

Shortly afterwards, full-back Craig Sturrock screwed a shot wide after neat play from Dale Reid and Sergio Alvarez.

The Spanish playmaker was becoming more and more influential and, on the half-time whistle, Alvarez teed up Tulleth whose curling shot was narrowly wide of the target.

It took only two minutes of second half action for dominant Tayport to open the scoring.

A through ball released top scorer Dale Reid and he advanced into Carnoustie territory and beat the goalkeeper with a composed, low finish.

‘Port were in the ascendancy and Tulleth tested the ‘keeper from distance and then delivered the corner kick for Gregor Anderson whose diving header was cleared off the line.

Midway through the half, Sam Simpson sent a dipping shot narrowly wide for the Gowfers, who were beginning to apply pressure.

Gavin Sorley made a big save on 79 minutes to preserve the lead and, five minutes later, the Canniepairt men sealed the win.

Dale Reid tried to find Alan Tulleth, but the pass was blocked back into his path and he immediately picked out youngster Struan Christie.

The local lad came in from the right side, took the ball into the box and angled a fine strike low into the far corner of the net for his first goal for the club.

In the final few minutes, the home team had to endure some heavy challenges as frustration seemed to get the better of the visitors.

The hosts, however, saw out the game without any undue difficulty, to secure a well-earned victory.
