Tayport 3-1 Armadale

Tayport recorded their first East Premier League win of stop-start beginning to 2017 when they dug deep to defeat visiting Armadale Thistle on a brutally cold and wet afternoon at the Canniepairt.

Early on the visitors were to the fore and home ‘keeper Gavin Sorley made a great stop to keep out a long-range strike and that proved crucial, as it was Tayport who opened the scoring on 28 minutes.

Gary Sutherland and Jamie Mackie both won headers and Dale Reid latched onto the ball, finding Sutherland, whose pass picked out the on-rushing Marc Ogg and he fired low past the ‘keeper and into the net.

To the frustration of the Canniepairt faithful, Thistle equalised on the half hour courtesy of a well-struck free kick from the corner of the penalty area.

On 38 minutes, ‘Port regained the advantage.

Marc Ogg launched a ball over the top for Dale Reid who centred for Gary Sutherland and the striker marked the beginning of his second spell in Tayport colours by slamming home from close range to make it 2-1.

Gavin Sorley then saved an Armadale free kick and the hosts went in at the break with a narrow advantage.

Dale Reid and Jamie Mackie both missed good opportunities to extend the lead after the break and Reid was unlucky to see the ‘Dale ‘keeper save his audacious overhead kick, as Tayport began to turn the screw.

‘Port eventually made it 3-1 with quarter of an hour remaining.

The increasingly influential Sergio Alvarez made an interception, advanced into Armadale territory and linked up with Jamie Mackie who sent a clinical finish beyond the ‘keeper to seal a hard-fought win.

Late on substitute Alan Tulleth dragged one effort wide of the target and almost cashed in when the goalkeeper took one touch too many in his own six-yard box.

By that stage, however, Tayport had already done enough to secure a deserved win.
