Tayport and Ayrshire visitors Muirkirk played out a rather drab goalless draw on the Canniepairt in the third round of the Scottish Junior Cup.
It was a match which never really took off and there was little to warm the ’Port support on a cold November afternoon.
The young Muirkirk team forced several fruitless corners during the opening half hour as Tayport found it difficult to assert themselves on the game. Stefan Elvin did threaten, lofting a left-footer over the top, while Gary Sutherland dragged a shot wide of the target.
On the stroke of half-time there was a chance for Matt Adam at the far post but he saw his effort blocked and the teams were goalless at the break.
There was more action in the second period with the tempo having been raised somewhat.
Early in the half both sides had an opportunity to make the breakthrough.
Stefan Elvin’s strike broke for Gary Sutherland inside the area but he was thwarted by the alert Muirkirk ’keeper, George Scott.
The visitors immediately launched a swift counter-attack and Graham Condon lobbed the ball over the advancing Gavin Wilson, but the ball hit the bar.
As fellow striker Mason Boyd seemed set to fire in the rebound, Clark Kay made a last-gasp tackle to clear the danger.
Matt Adam then had a one-on-one opening, but the goalkeeper saved with his chest, as Tayport’s frustration continued.
The introduction of Alan Tulleth and Connor MacLeod coincided with more spark from the hosts, who very much wanted to avoid a replay in Ayrshire.
Gary Sutherland had a shot deflected narrowly wide for a corner, as substitute MacLeod.
In the final chance of the match, Stefan Elvin drove an effort high over the bar and the tie will now be decided at Muirkirk’s Burnside Park.
