Team spirit is key to Raith Rovers’ form says midfielder Spencer

Raith Rovers’ midfielder Brad Spencer says the club’s strong start to the season is down to the bond between the players.

Despite competing with a small squad, Raith have every reason to be delighted with their start to the season, with just one defeat in their eight Championship games so far after being promoted from League One.

Midfield star Spencer says that having a good team spirit is key to their success on the pitch.

“We've got a good squad and a good togetherness and can go out and play well,” he said.

“I think one of the reasons that we got promoted last season was because of the dressing room.

“We were a really close group and a good bunch of mates and it's the same this year. The boys that have come in have just added to that.

“We're a close-knit group and I think that's why we're getting good results.”

The 24-year-old says he has no doubts that Raith are good enough to be competing at the top end of the table and not engaging in a relegation scrap, typical of the new boys to a league.

"We've got a good team this year and we should be going out and playing for a play-off position.”

“We know that it's a tough league but that's where we want to find ourselves come May and be fighting for promotion - not the other way round.

“We want to be as high up the table as we can be. We came up from League One and have shown that we can do well in the Championship and hopefully we can keep that going until the end of May.”

After a weekend off Raith now head into the busy festive schedule, travelling to Alloa on Boxing Day, playing host to Queen of the South next Tuesday, before heading to Dunfermline for the New Year derby on January 2.

“It's a busy time,” Spencer says, “Alloa are a good team and they've been in this league for a couple of years now. They've shown they can go out and play against the big teams like Hearts,

“They were bottom a few weeks ago but they've had a couple of good results, we had a great win over Morton and now they're sitting above us. It just shows what this league is all about.”

He added: “You need to roll your sleeves up every week, first of all fight, then try and play good football and get a win.”
