Training resumes as Saints start to prepare for a return

St Andrews United have been busy making plans for the new season starting, while also reflecting on the one just past.

The on-going easing of restrictions on sport has seen the players return to the club for training as Charlie King gets set for his first full term at the helm.

King’s squad has been boosted with the signings of Willie Campbell, Douglas Crowe and Graeme Hart.

Club vice-chair Blair Smith said it was positive to see the players back in training and with light at the end of the tunnel with regards competitive action kicking off again.

Mr Smith said: “Saints are now back training, though, in non-contact approaches.

“There is a tentative plan for competitive football to begin at the end of September, and for some friendlies during September in preparation.

“It’s too early to give any dates with any certainty, particularly in light of recent events at Aberdeen, but we want to be well prepared when it comes.

“We have a new manager in place – Charlie King.

“He has announced his new assistant manager – former player Drew Fleming. “

The club also presented last season’s Players of the Year trophies this week after ta non-contact training session.

These were awarded to:

Kyle Wilson who won three awards; top goalscorer, supporters’ POTY, players’ POTY.

Michael Fleming, who won the manager’s POTY.

Ryan McInnes picked up the committee’s POTY.

Club spokesman Donald Gellatly provided a rundown on King’s hat-trick of new signings.

Some arrive at the club with a wealth of experience while others are taking the step up and are aiming to muscle into the St Andrews United first team

Mr Gellatly said: “Willie Campbell is a 36-year old defender who is well known around the Fife non-league scene from his time at Glenrothes.

“Douglas Crowe is a midfielder who won The Spartans Under 20’s player-of-the-season award a couple of years ago.

“Graeme Hart is a striker who has scored more than 100 goals for Forfar West End throughout the last eight years.”
