With 20 minutes to go, Saints could have been 3-1 up, but for an unbelievable miss in front of goal by Falconer and a penalty not given by a referee.

It was 25 minutes before Tranent looked like contributing anything to the fixture and their supporters began to give them some stick.

In 27 minutes, on only their second break into Saints’ half, Tranent got the first goal.

From the edge of the penalty area a pass inside to an unmarked Hawkins saw him have time to get a shot away.

Unfortunately for Saints it was deflected off a defender and keeper Mooney was unable to get to it.

Tranent began to play more of an attacking role but Saints defended well and just seconds before half time got a break when a low fast cross which the home keeper failed to hold and the ball rebounded off a defender into back of the net.

Saints started the better in the second period with Hendry, in particular, supplying good efforts into the area.

Tranent were kept busy in defence for a period of 15 minutes with it looking odds on that Saints would score to take the lead.

Tranent began to play further upfield but were still vulnerable in defence on the break.

In 65 minutes a good cross from their right was only just cleared away.

With 10 minutes to go Falconer broke through but the home keeper did well to block away.

Both teams gave it their all during the last minute.

A long ball over the top by Tranent in injury time saw Robertson chase to the byline and, by evading a tackle, he hit a low curling cross past a Saints defender and the ball deflected off Mooney’s arm into the net.

Tranent were delighted to win all three points in a game they could have lost.
