We can't let Sauchie get too far ahead of us

Boss Ian Barrett had warned pre-match that Armadale, who went into the game second from bottom, were in a false position.

And so it proved, with Saints finding it tough to get their noses in front against their hosts.

Against the run of play, and after having soaked up a lot of Saints pressure, Armadale sucker punched Saints with an opener they looked keen to defend.

But with the clock ticking down Craig Wedderburn rescued a point with a late equaliser.

This weekend Barrett takes his side into an exciting looking clash with Sauchie at Barnetts Park and the boss is aiming to haul in the current league leaders.

The boss said: “If they were to beat us then the four point lead they have turns into seven and with a game in hand potentially 10.

“That’s a lot for any team to make up so we want to make sure it doesn’t happen.”

Barrett admitted it was a frustrating afternoon at Armadale.

“They were very difficult to break down,” he said.

“At half-time it was 0-0 and we were dominating.

“I said to my assistant ‘they’re going to end up breaking up the park and scoring’ and that’s what happened.

“We kept on throwing absolutely everything at them and then Craig Wedderburn got the equaliser with five minutes to go.

“Coming off the park it felt like a defeat.”

United go into the match on the back of a 3-0 midweek friendly defeat to Kelty Hearts on Tuesday night.

Neil McCabe, Jason Penman and Scott Dalziel netted for a Kelty side which currently leads the Super League.

“We had 18 players there so it was really two teams we played,” said Barrett.

“It was a good chance to try players out in different positions.”
