We'll, be young, fit and strong

The gaffer has been over seeing something of a rebuilding job at Barnetts Park since the club was relegated from the Super League last term.

And the gaffer knows exactly the type of player he wants to help them bounce straight back up, attracting the best in young talent to blend with the experience already at the club.

Barrett said: “We’ve brought in a couple of players this week, Daryl Falconer and Graeme Nutt.

“Graeme has played with Oakley and Dundonald Bluebell and Daryl has been with Glenrothes.

“Daryl is a young striker who is fit and strong.

“He fits into the type of player we’re looking to bring to the club - young, around 20-22 but with a couple of seasons of junior experience under his belt. We already have experienced players here like Craig Wedderburn, Sam Buchan and Barry Sibanda so they’ll work well with them.”

Saints have started their pre-season schedule, beating Lochore Welfare 1-0 on Saturday before putting three past Leven United without reply on Tuesday night.

The gaffer reckons both games were a decent test.

Saints are back at Barnetts Park this weekend as they host their annual Abbeyford Cup Tournament.

Greig Park Rangers, East Craigie and Lochee United will visit the town for two days of top class, pre-season football.

It’s another step forward for United who have already played two games this pre-season.

Lochore Welfare and Leven United have been beaten with the club scoring four goals and having yet to concede.

Boss Ian Barrett says this pre-season is delivering exactly what he wants for his team as they aim to bounce straight back up to the Super League.

The gaffer said: “We only scored the one goal on Saturday against Lochore but what pleased me was the amount of chances we created.

“Leven United were quality opposition, they’ve barely finished their season and only had a short break, so were fit.

“But again we created a lot of chances in that game and this time were able to score another couple.

“I’ve said to the players that the results in these games are not important, it’s about them listening to what we want them to do.”

The gaffer is now preparing to step up his side’s preparations for the new term with the hosting of the Abbeyford Cup.

It’s a tournament the gaffer knows well.

“I was at it last year as manager of Greig Park Rangers,” said the boss.

“I remember it being really well organised with some good crowds.

“A lot of people come on the Saturday and then want to come back again on the Sunday.

“At 12 Greig Park Rangers play Lochee and then at 3.00p.m. we play East Craigie.

“Greig Park Rangers are as good as some junior sides and Lochee are in the Super League so we know how strong they are.

“East Craigie are something of an unknown commodity.”

Saints are set to continue to add to their squad.

The manager is tying up deals for a couple of new players and expects to have them signed for the weekend’s tournament.
