Any hopes Kirkcaldy YM had of staging something of a Scottish Cup run were over before they began as they went out at the first round stage.

The Denfield Park club travelled to face Aberdeen University and found the students just too much.

On their home park, Aberdeen raced into a two goal lead before YM managed to pull one back.

Any hopes of a comeback were pretty short-lived, though, as the hosts grabbed another to see out the game comfortably.

At the weekend YM face a difficult trip to face second placed Downfield on league duty.

There was better news for Thornton Hibs in the same competition as two goals from Chris Ireland helped them ease past Ashfield 2-1 at Memorial Park.

The tie was far from a glamour clash with the Hibs just happy to grind out their win in the end.

Ireland scored in both halves for Thornton against and Ashfield side who were reduced to 10 men.

The second round draw will take place on Sunday, October 5 at 1.00p.m. with matches scheduled for Saturday, October 25.

On Saturday Thornton welcome Arbroath Vics.

Dundonald Bluebell were in Fife and Lothians Cup action and knocked out Arniston thanks to a 3-1 home win.

Morrison, Laird and Young did the damage for the Bluebell with Arniston’s goal coming from the spot early in the second half.

Dundonald were forced into making changes pre-match but were always in control of the cup-tie.

This weekend Dundonald travel to Dundee Violet.
