Forrest keeps his cool to land the Battle Trophy

Grant Forrest from Craigielaw Golf Club won Crail Golfing Society's world ranking Battle Trophy tournament over the weekend with a birdie three at the first extra hole of a two man playoff.

His four round score of 291 over the par 72 Craighead Links course was matched by 47 year old former assistant professional Euan McIntosh from the Els Club in Dubai and the two had to go to a sudden death playoff at the 10th hole to decide the winner.

“The standard of golf played was exceptional in seriously testing conditions of 25 mph winds from the north on Saturday and the west on Sunday,” said Crail Golfing Society captain David Maiden.

“For the two leaders to achieve four round totals only three over par is testament to their extraordinary skill.”

In third place on 295 was Liam Johnston of Dumfries and County Golf Club, who also had the distinction of a final round hole in one on the 299 yard 10th hole after opting to take a three wood off the tee.

Fife’s Conor Syme from Drumoig Golf Club, the current Australian amateur champion, led after every one of the first three rounds, but fell away over the final 18 holes.

Forrest (22), who returned to Scotland in 2015 after graduating from California’s San Diego University, was the 2012 Scottish amateur champion and won the top ranked St Andrews Links Trophy in 2014.

He was a member of both the Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup winning team in 2015 and the victorious Scottish team in the 2015 European Championships in Sweden.
