Group takes the plunge with Olympic hopefuls

Comprising swimmers from Cupar and Step Rock, the youngsters were up against individuals who’ll return to Glasgow again this week at the Olympic trials.

Top performer for the club was 12-year old Adam Young, who had qualified in almost all individual events.

Adam managed his demanding programme well, the highlight being his 100m butterfly final, missing out on a medal by just 0.17s.

Setting several new lifetime bests, he also finished fifth and ninth in the butterfly and backstroke 50m finals.

Lewis Baillie swam 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke, setting two new PBs out of his three individual swims, a hard-fought sprint seeing him just touched out of a 50m finals placing by 0.05s to finish 11th.

Murdo Denholm set new PBs in the 100m breaststroke and in an impressive 100m butterfly.

Cameron McMaster secured four PBs and got ever closer to breaking the one minute barrier for the 100m freestyle.

Experiencing SNAGs for the first time, Charlotte Williamson, competing in the breaststroke and backstroke, used her underwater work well to gain two new PBs.

Anna Hedley (butterfly and backstroke) earned three lifetime bests and improve on her entry placings.

In her last ever competitive meet, swimmer-turned-coach Alexandrea Smith-Mackay brought her experience to the fore creating a good atmosphere and focussed racing.

Alexandrea, along with Louise Moncrieff, Màiri Noble and Ellen McQuilton, swam two freestyle relays.

Joining the 14-16 boys for the freestyle relays was anchorman Findlay Baillie.

Many of FiNEST’s younger swimmers were also in the relay teams, gaining additional motivation to qualify as individuals in future years.
