Hundreds arrive for Scottish Open Volleyball tournament

The 30th Scottish Open Volleyball Tournament had everything was needed for a spectacular weekend of sport.

Some 105 teams from all over the UK and continental Europe descended on the North Inch to savour what was without doubt the best ever SOVT.

The Small Countries Division International Beach Volleyball competition added a totally new dimension to the tournament especially with the local interest in the men’s competition with local rising stars Connor Boyle and Mitchell Brown, both products of Kinross Volleyball Club.

Local interest was very much to the fore in the grass court competition too with Fife teams being represented on the 38 courts spread throughout the seven divisions of competition including Dunfermline Phoenix, Kelty Chiefs, Team Fife, Kinross Juniors and Kinross mixed

After the Saturday grass competition most of the local sides were in contention for the special 30th edition winners’ trophies but by the end of play on Sunday.

Men’s division one saw the Kilmarnock Leg Ends come out on top with Aberdeen side Jedziemyz Cyganami in runners’ up slot.

Men’s division two had the Livinston Lizards in top spot beating the Blue Jays in their final with Kinross lad, Mark Cathro’s Ferry Flamingoes winning the consolation competition.

In the women’s competition Livingston Lizards lot out to Carnoustie’s Volleybrawlers with Monkys from Whitley Bay winning the consolation.

Perth side Everest Inn overcame Old Hobbits Die Hard in mixed division.

The International Beach competition for men and women drew the crowds and locals cheered all the way when Perth boy Seain Cook was crowned with gold.
