Adam Jones signs for Fife Flyers

Dual English/Canadian national Adam Jones has put pen to paper on a contract for the Fife Flyers for the 2020/21 season.

The 24-year-old defenceman joins Fife from National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) side the Basingstoke Bison.

The Birmingham-born Brit joins the club after his brother Sam left Kirkcaldy for the Sheffield Steelers earlier this summer.

Jones honed his craft in the Canadian college leagues with the Okanagan Hockey Academy based in Penticton a city in the British Columbia region of Canada.

He then moved on to the Banff Hockey Academy in Alberta, Canada before moving on to the Summerland Steam in British Columbia for the 2014/15 and 2015/16, making more than 100 appearances in the Kootenay International Junior League.

In 2016 Adam then made the trip back across the pond and joined the Telford Tigers in the English Premier Ice Hockey League (EPL), making more than 60 appearances for the club, scoring 20 points from the blue line.

The side would go on to win that year’s league championship.

He then made his Elite League debut in 2017 with stints at the Guildford Flames and the Belfast Giants.

At Jones’s current club, the Basingstoke Bison, he has made 86 appearances, scoring 69 points.

On joining the club Adam said: “I come here having spoken to Todd and it will be an opportunity for me to play in the Elite League and develop my game and hopefully play a big role in the team.

“I am hoping to bring a strong defensive play and a physical presence, and I am not afraid to drop the gloves when the time is right.

“My time in Canada has really benefitted my game, when we first moved there we had an outdoor rink literally 100 yards from our house so we were out there every day after school and kids here just don’t get the ice time.

“I spoke to my brother Sam about his time in Fife last year and although he had his knee problem and the season didn’t go as well as the team would have liked, he said a lot of good things about it.”

Fife Flyers head coach Todd Dutiaume said he was “excited with his new signing.

“We have been chasing Adam up since the end of last season.

“He will be a welcome addition to the back end and I am sure he will be a fan favourite.

“Adam is a slightly different player to his brother, but has some similar attributes – skates well, moves the puck well and his first pass is good.

“Some of the things we have heard about him have all been very good, and people seem to think he is going to exceed at the Elite League level and so do we.

“We are pretty excited to replace an individual like Sam, who came in and was quite dynamic last year. We were keen to find a replacement and I think we have found another one.

“In the state of the league, in the last couple of years where you see the speed and the depth grow it is crucial that we are able to run with at least a minimum of six D-men and we are hoping Adam is going to play a big part in that.”

Dutiaume also made comment on Adam Jones’s championship winning credentials.

“It doesn’t matter what level you win at, when you get a taste for winning and you make it part of your drive to go out and win each and every year that attitude is infectious and we have seen it when we have brought guys in in the past that they do play with that edge and desire to obtain that again and we are hoping Adam brings that to the table.”
