Fife Flyers lost the services of two key players this week as doubts remained over the start of the 2020-21 ice hockey season.

Carlo Finnuci signed for a team in Romania, while Sam Jones inked a two-year deal with Elite League rivals, Sheffield Steelers.

The club has now lost four players from last season’s roster, with Kyle Just moving to Germany, and veteran defenceman, Scott Aarssen retiring.,

The clubs one of several teams yet to make any signing announcements ahead of any confirmed start date of structure for te forthcoming season which could face the prospect of social distancing impacting drastically on crowds rinkside.

Finucci spent four seasons with Fifem, during which time he became the club;s all-time top points scorer in the EIHL - and a player loved by fans who warmed to his commitment and work rate.

He signed off with a message of thanks to the time and the supporters.

He said the number of good luck messages which had poured into his soclal media timelines had been “overwhelming” and added: “It shows how big an honour it was to play in front of the Flyers’ fans.

“I will be forever grateful for the support I received year after year.”

Finucci came to the UK after icing with Las Vegas Wranglers in the ECHL and a season in Denmark with Rungsted.

He joined Swindon Wildcats in 2015-16, but was keen to test himself in the top flight EIHLl, and that opportunity came when Flyers signed him for the 2016-17 season.

enough for the opportunity they gave me,” he wrote on social media. “So many great memories throughout my time in Fife, and becoming the club’s all-time points leader in the EIHL era is something I am very proud to have achieved.”

Finucci is one of two Canadians who will ice with Brasov for the 2020-21 campaign - the roster already includes Cody Carlsson, who iced with Glasgow Clan.

His new team play out of a 1500-capacity rink and is a relative newcomer to the sport, having joined in 2007 - but it has won a host of silverware and figured in major finals. Brasov were runners up in the league in 2013-14.

Sam Jones also departed last week after one season in Kirkcaldy.

The talented young defenceman will return south to wear the orange of Steelers..

Jones gained his early hockey experience in Canada having moving to north America at the age of eight, and was schooled in the Okanagan Hockey Academy.

He iced with Swindon Wildcats in 2018-19 before making the jump into the EIHL with Flyers last season.

Earlier this summer, the player launched Sam Jones Sports Performance Training to bring his knowledge of working with leading trainers in Canada to the UK.

Aaron Fox, Steelers head coach, said “Sam is a very talented Brit Defenseman who I felt would be a great addition to our Roster.

“He’s big and skates very well for his size. He will play a physical game and can add some offense as well.”
