The match drew a crowd of 2300 – Stars’ second biggest in the EIHL – with Todd Dutiaume’s team securing two precious points against the side placed directly above them.

And it sets up an equally important showdown with eighth placed Manchester Storm at Fife Ice Arena on Sunday (5:30pm) where Flyers have to deliver a win within regulation time to keep the pressure on in the race for a top eight qualifying place.

In an open first period, Flyers grabbed an early lead through Carlo Finucci who finished off a fine four on two rush down the ice, but the teams went in level thanks to Matt Carter’s equaliser.
Stars also outshot their visitors 20-9, giving netminder Adam Morrison another busy night.

Flyers started to create more chances in the second period, and regained their early lead with a rocket of a shot from the blue line from Michal Gutwald.

They kept that advantage throughout the third period and, with just over on minute left to play, Stars pulled their netminder in a bid to snatch an equaliser.

The move backfired when Mike Cazzola hit the empty net to seal victory.
