I'll learn from Irish effort says top amateur golfer

The Drumoig amateur missed the cut in Ireland as he took part in just his second Challenge Tour competition.

The 21-year-old wasn’t too disheartened about finishing four shots below the cut line in a field of experienced pros - instead taking the positives from his two days there.

He said: “I’m not looking to turn pro for another couple of years so at the moment it’s all just about getting the experience.

“It was a big competition and a real eye opener.

“I didn’t drive well on the first day and that’s one of the strongest parts of my game.

“It was frustrating.”

Syme, refreshed after a few days rest following the Volopa, joined two other top Scottish amateurs on Wednesday as they flew to Florida for practice ahead of the World Amateur Team Championships in Mexico next week.

Syme, along with Grant Forrest and Robert MacIntyre will be aiming to continue Scotland’s fine tradition in the event and return with the Eisenhower Trophy.

“We won it back in 2008,” he said.

“I played with Grant and Bob at the European Amateurs and also as part of the Great Britain and Ireland team so we know each other really well.

“We have a good chance and all want to do our best for Scotland.”
