It's a family affair as Baddeleys help inspire Largo to victory

The second XI however travelled south of Edinburgh to play Preston Village as that match managed to beat the elements.

Winning the toss the Preston Village captain unsurprisingly asked Largo to bat on the sluggish wicket.

This decision was rewarded as Largo soon lost Dakin, struggling to find form, and Mowat who struck three impressive fours before holing out to fine leg for 14.

The club’s Ben Coates the soon followed as Largo struggled to cope with both the wicket and the extremely slow outfield.

William Naismith (24), beginning to show considerable promise, gave some impetus to the innings and was ably assisted by skipper Chris Baddeley (13) and Rob Tooze whose patient 20 not out gave the Largo score of 105 for 7 some respectability.

Given the conditions and Largo’s reputation of being a better bowling than batting team this was a defendable total.

The home team found scoring just as difficult with the Largo bowlers, backed up by some superb fielding, exploited the conditions to the maximum.

Mowat gave nothing away in a miserly spell of 0 for 16 off 8 overs and was backed up by Mattthew, the elder of the Baddeley brothers, who soon found line and length, taking three wickets for 11 including that of opener Lee who went for a duck H. Coates taking a well judged catch.

Dad Chris and younger son Nick Baddeley then capped a fine family afternoon with the former taking three wickets for 10 and making a fine run out to dismiss the opposition skipper.

Nick gave admirable assistance to the Largo cause by wicketkeeping and finally joining the very promising Jack Eglington as a bowler to scotch any chance of a home team victory.

The Baddeleys finished the day with an impressive family haul of seven wickets for 26 runs, two catches, two run outs, two stumpings plus 16 runs.

The family saga was even furthered by Ben Coates economical 0 for 21 off eight overs adding to Dad Coates catch.

With the home team’s final score closing on 91, this was a very satisfying result for Largo Cricket Club , all of whose teams have suffered some agonisingly close defeats so far this summer.

The club hopes it d will give renewed confidence in the games to come before the season’s end.
