The Kingdom Kangaroos began their 2017 season with a well-earned triumph at the weekend, winning the Border Cup in a 3-club tournament held in South Queensferry.

The Fife side faced off against the West Lothian Eagles and Tyne Tees Tigers in shortened games.

Whilst their nation’s rugby counterparts may have crumbled under the pressure, it was left to Fife’s finest to fly the flag in cross-border competition, seeing off English foes, the Tigers, with a resounding win in the final to win the preseason silverware.

In the qualifying games early in the day, the Tigers had narrowly defeated the Roos before the Fife side rebounded with a trouncing of their West Lothian rivals the Eagles.

With Tyne Tees also defeating the Eagles the stage was set for the Roos to get revenge.

The Roos were fielding a few new faces with Lachlan Blaikie, Jack Chalmers and Harry Black making their debuts.

All three made their impact felt in the early games, with Blaikie contesting well in the ruck and Chalmers’ running creating regular overlaps and scoring chances for teammates.

With the final game starting off end-to- end, Kirkcaldy’s Jamie Gorman slotted a difficult shot to give the Roos a 2-goal lead.

After the halftime break and with the Tyneside club mounting a comeback, Dalgety Bay’s Mark Flanagan tore away from the chasing pack to finish from long range and a tight angle, the Roos final lead being 49 points to 30.

The Kingdom Kangaroos are next in action at the Haggis Cup tournament in Milngavie on April 8, ahead of their league season commencing in May.
