Knockhill victory

A KIRKCALDY teenager has produced the performance of a lifetime to secure the newcomers prize in the Scottish Formula Ford Zetec championships.

Jonathan Adam won the final race of the calendar at Knockhill last week and in doing so managed to secure first place in the newcomers standings and third in the overall championship.

The 19-year-old had to win to claim the title and he did so in style - finishing only eight one-hundredths of a second off the course record.

It is a fantastic achievement for Jonathan in what was his inaugural season in a single-seater car.

He said: "I'm absolutely delighted. The car was just brilliant in the last race and it was a great end to a really good year.

"It was hard at first coming from karting because it is completely different so I had to go through the learning process.

"But we kept progressing from finishing down in 6th or 7th at the start of the season to winning races and getting quicker all the time."

Next year Jonathan hopes to contest either the prestigious UK Formula Renault series or the Renault Clio league, depending on the budget he has at his disposal.

He said: "Formula Renault can keep me on the track towards Formula One but that requires mega money.

"Renault Clio would be half the cost and a lot of Touring Car teams pick up their drivers from there so that would be a good second option."

As part of his prize for winning the newcomers championship, Jonathan will compete in the Formula Ford winter series at Snetterton and Brand's Hatch.
