Medal haul as Fife runners prepare for Inter District

Blagownie Park in Aberdeen played host to the East District Cross Country Championships and dry, sunny conditions led to an exciting day of competition.

It was a successful day for Fife AC, with the club returning south with five team medals and three individual medals.

There was double gold for Edinburgh University student Logan Rees in the under-20 men’s race – winning both the individual and team titles along with this club mates Tristan Rees in the fifth and the ever-improving Sam Fernando in 13th.

Logan pushed the pace from early on, eventually easing away from the field to win from Aberdeen AAC’s Broc Dury and Perth Strathtay Harriers’ Sol Sweeney.

There was another victory for pre-race favourite Anna Hedley in the under-13 girls’ race, who once again led from gun to tape and won her race with ease from sisters Katie and Emma Johnston of Edinburgh AC.

Anna Daglish and Isla Hedley were very close behind in fourth and fifth place respectively, meaning that the girls won team gold.

In the senior women’s race, Steph Pennycook ran well to finish in silver medal position behind Morag MacLarty of Central AC, who won her fifth senior East District Cross Country title.

Steph, Helen Sharpe in ninth and Halina Rees in 12th won team bronze behind strong opposition from Central AC and the local favourites Metro Aberdeen.

In the under-17 men’s race, Fife AC had three men in the top 10: George Rees ran very well to finish in bronze medal position and lead his team to team gold, with Robert Sparks and Euan Boyle close behind in fourth and sixth place respectively.

In the under-15 boy’s race, Fife AC had three boys in the top 10: Ben Sandilands finished in fourth place and led the team to team silver, with twins Iain McWhinnie in fifth and Gavin McWhinnnie in 10th.

The event doubled up as the selection race for the Inter District Cross Country Championships at Holyrood Park in Edinburgh early next year. A good number of Fife AC runners is expected.
