UPPER Largo’s Derek Milne will, for the first time, take on disabled golfers from across Europe at the East Sussex Championship Golf Course in the 36-hole British Disabled Open on August 24-26.

Derek (45) who, for the last 13 years, has run a boarding cattery with his wife Morag and his new foster family, served in the Armed Forces until a road accident in 1985 left him with no fingers on his left hand.

A member of the Scottish Disability Golf Partnership, and a new member at Charleton Golf Club, near Colinsburgh, he has rebuilt his confidence and is now a strong contender, through the Scottish Order of Merit Championship, to take on the English in the Disabled Ryder Cup Auld Enemies match in September.

Derek said: “After my accident, I lost a lot of confidence and it wasn’t until I came across the SDGP in 2009, and its programme of golf lessons and competition, that I managed to gain enough confidence to compete.”
