Jonny Adam is closing in on another British motorsport title after helping Beechdean Aston Martin to a dominant win at Brands Hatch in the British GT Championship.

At the corresponding race in 2012 the Kirkcaldy racer was denied by the smallest margin in the history of the series, but no-one could deny the hard-charging Fifer and team-mate Andrew Howard this time round as they powered the V12 Vantage GT3 to victory at the Kent circuit.

With Adam having secured second place on the starting grid after Saturday’s qualifying session, Howard made a superb start when the lights turned green on Sunday and took the lead in the early stages of the race.

After a faultless opening stint the team boss had given Adam an ideal platform to go on and close out the race in style, and the works Aston Martin driver needed no second invitation as he built a healthy lead all the way to the chequered flag after two hours and 79 laps.

The win puts the duo in the driving seat at the top of the championship standings with three races remaining.

It also keeps Jonny on course to add to his British title wins in the Seat Cupra Championship (2007 and 2008) and the Renault Clio Cup (2005).

Following the podium celebrations, Jonny said: “To win here more than makes up for the disappointment of last year!

“We qualified well and Andrew’s first stint was flawless, which set me up for a good opportunity to take victory.

“The layout of the Brands Hatch GP circuit really suits the Vantage and the team worked beautifully on car set up and pit stops to allow us to be very competitive all weekend.

“To be leading the championship at this stage is very important and a great feeling, but it’s a small gap and there is still a lot to play for in terms of points at both Zandvoort, which we haven’t been to before, and the final round at Donington Park.

“Our aim has always been the title, and we will continue to work hard to improve our speed and performance for the rest of the season to be in the mix going into the final event.”

The Avon Tyres British GT Championship heads overseas to Zandvoort, Holland, for the next two rounds of the 2013 Championship, which will take place over the weekend of September 7 and 8.
