Week 2 - Lunch with the Queen, a family surprise, and a Team Scotland get-together
The countdown towards the 2014 Commonwealth Games continued for Kirkcaldy netball star Lesley MacDonald this week.
The former Kirkcaldy High School pupil will captain the Scottish Thistles at the Glasgow Games and she is enjoying the build-up to the big event.
None more so than this past week when she had the opportunity to have lunch with the Queen when she visited the Commonwealth Games facilities last Wednesday.
Lesley told the Press: “I was extremely honoured to be invited to lunch with the Queen. It was a surreal experience but one I loved every minute of.”
The netball squad also enjoyed a surprise gathering of family and friends this week.
“It was unbelievably humbling,” Lesley explained. “All the players and management team walked into the hotel to cheers from their loved ones.
“Videos from each of the players families were played which showed the pride, love and support they have for their daughters. Although the players put in the hard work on the court we could not do this without the support of our families and the event gave us all the opportunity to say thank you.”
Lesley and the Scottish netballers were also involved in a get-together with the rest of the Team Scotland squad over the weekend involving all 310 athletes and management staff across 17 sports.
She added: “To be involved in the biggest Team Scotland is slightly overwhelming.
“We’re in a bubble around the netball team and our only focus is on us, but it’s great that our 17 individual sports are coming together to be one Team Scotland.
“Our last task of the camp was to collect our team kit and this is when it becomes real. When you see your name on the kit it makes you immensely proud.”
Lesley featured in a BBC 2 documentary on Sunday - Game, Net and Match - which followed the Scottish netball team’s journey for the past two years - all the highs, lows, cheers and tears. If you missed it you can also now view it on YouTube.
Lesley is now preparing to head into the athletes village this weekend. Only 14 days to go ....
