LEVENMOUTH muscleman Jimmy Salmond is celebrating after qualifying to compete on the world stage at the Mr Universe competition later this year.
Jimmy (44) qualified for the annual bodybuilding event, held by the National Amateur Bodybuilders Association, by winning the Mr Scotland title in April and then finishing in third place in the Mr Britain event earlier this month.
He is now set to take on the world’s elite, of the class four category, in Southport on November 3.
Speaking to the Mail, Jimmy, who is the boss of the Unique Physique health studio in Leven, said he can’t wait.
“I competed in Mr Universe in 2010 and I was just out the top sixth,” he said. “My goal this year is to get into that top six.
“I always find time to train, as you are judged on muscle. You have to be in proportion, though – you can’t have a large chest and small arms, or large legs and no upper body. All of your muscle groups have got to be balanced.
“Normally, you find in the area competitions there are a lot of flaws in competitors’ physiques but, when you get to Mr Universe, your physique has to be more balanced.
“They also look at your condition – you have to get your fat level right down to as low as five per cent – and obviously your presentation as well, as you have got to be able to hold yourself right and hold your poses.”
Jimmy has been competing in bodybuilding competitions since 1987 but this year will be his last competing as a Mr.
He revealed he plans to take a year out to concentrate on judging and will then move up to senior level.
It has been a successful career, though. Among others, he has won 10 Scottish titles, a North Britain title, the Mansfield Classic, and became Mr Britain in 2005, while he has twice been in the top six in the world.
He puts his record down to not only training hard but also the help he gets from those at the gym, his friends and his family, particularly his fiancee Milena.
He continued: “Milena helps me prepare all my food, which is good, as that’s a big part of it.
“You could train seven days a week but if you eat garbage, you will still look garbage. But you could train three days a week, eat good and you will look great.”
