Tennis aces continue good opening to season

LUNDIN Sports’ tennis side travelled recently to Kilburn Park, where St Andrews lay in wait.

Douglas Allan and Melisa Cowan outclassed their opposite numbers 6-3, 6-2.

In their second tie, Douglas proved he is Lundin Sports’ supreme tactician and, with a few minor adjustments, the duo outfoxed the opposition, taking the second set 6-3.

In the final match of evening, they roared to a 6-1 win in the opening set and, although the St Andrews third pair upped their game, Allan and Cowan responded to the challenge, sealing a fine display with a 6-3 win.

Playing second couple were Alisa McLean and Greg Traill, who soon found themselves 4-1 down.

However, they dug deep and battled back to take the set 7-5.

The second set was a see-saw affair, with both couples gaining an advantage, only for the other pair to hit back – but it was the St Andrews pairing who sneaked it 7-5.

In the last match, they came up against the big-serving Palain, who was serving like a demon, and this was the basis of St Andrews securing a 6-2, 6-2 win.

Appearing as third couple were the experienced Stuart Kerr and Ann Hill.

They got off to a fast start, sweeping aside St Andrews’ second pair 6-2.

However, the opposition regrouped and turned the tables on Lundin, snatching the second set 6-2.

In the second tie of the evening, the fast courts, coupled with a now-heavy ball because of rain, allowed Stuart to do some damage with his service and, with Ann showing some astonishing net play, they ran out 6-3, 6-2 winners.

By this time, Lundin’s pair were on a roll and St Andrews’ top pairing of Greive and Dunn found them too hot to handle as they cruised to 6-1, 6-1 win, playing some good tennis.

Overall, a fine 6-3 win helped to maintain Lundin Sports’ excellent start to the new season.
