SWALLOWS met Premier League leaders Valleyfield in this first-round league cup tie but lost 3-1.
On a beautiful calm day, both teams produced some excellent football in a very close-fought encounter.
It was Valleyfield who struck first when a long kick from their ‘keeper found his striker, who scored at thesecond attempt after a goalmouth scramble.
The post has firstly saved the home team but left them unable to clear.
Swallows fought back and their efforts paid off when they levelled the game before the interval, when Patterson prodded home a spilled shot from Jardine.
In the second half, Valleyfield’s strong midfield started to take control and, after a number of close shaves, they scored from a loose ball in the box.
St Monans countered and only a miraculous one-handed save by the away keeper prevented Jardine from equalising.
In the last minute, with Swallows pushing for an equaliser, Valleyfield put the game beyond doubt when a through ball skidded off the surface past the on-rushing Black, to leave the striker with a tap in and secure the win.
Overall, it was an excellent performance by the home side, who matched one of Fife’s top teams for long spells in the match.
Similar displays will hold Swallows in good stead for the rest of the season.
