Narrowing the search for Flyers’ greatest ever players

Plans to unveil Fife Flyers greatest ever players took a key step forward this week with the first draft of the long list of possible inductees.

The Fife Free Press is leading the search to name the top players in the club’s history - the first time it has ever been done.

The 75 greatest ever skaters will be named as part of Flyers’ 75th anniversary celebrations early in October.

But the preparatory work has started already.

With several generations of players to consider, it’s a daunting task for the panel being put together by the Press.

We have invited several fans to come on board to give us their input from watching the team in action across the decades.

And we will have input from the dressing-room as well as we seek to create the definitive guide to the greatest players ever to done the famous gold, white and blue tops.

The longlist covers every single decade from 1938 to the present day - but not every player can be included.

There are only 75 places available, and that means some tough decisions have to be made in the coming weeks as to who is in ... and who doesn’t make the cut.

The list includes imports as well as home-based players and coaches who have served with distinction behind the bench.

Allan Crow, editor of the Press, said: ‘‘The initial list is simply a starting point.

‘‘We’ve asked the panel members to go away and come up with as many additions as possible so the final number could easily rise significantly.

‘‘And the more names on the longlist, the harder it is to cut them down to the final 75 - and once that is done we have to produce a definitive top ten followed by deciding on the greatest ever Fife Flyer of all time!’’

The names on the long list are being kept under wraps - and the identity of the final 75 won’t be revealed until the first week in October when Flyers celebrate their landmark anniversary.
