Oliver is leading Kingdom swimmer

The championships offer Scotland’s leading swimmers with a physical, sensory or learning disability the opportunity to compete over distances not normally available at the National Championships.

It also gives them a chance to experience swimming in a 50 metre pool with electronic timing.

Four Disability Sport Fife members competed against representatives from throughout Scotland in a meet where 15 Scottish records were set on an afternoon of high quality.

Cupar’s Oliver Carter, a member of Carnegie SC was the leading Fife swimmer with times of 4:36.19 for 400m freestyle and 28.22 for 50m freestyle.

Oliver swims in the S10 class and these two performances earned him a gold and silver medal in the multi classification system.

Cara Smyth from INCAS also competes in the S10 class and although relatively new to performance swimming, she is already making an impression.

Cara’s times were 5:29.97 for 400m freestyle, 1:33.67 for 100m butterfly, 3:06.69 for 200m IM and 1:16.64 for 100m freestyle.

Cara won two bronze medals in the multi classification system.

Steven McCormick from FINS and Kirsty Brunton from DSF were the final two S8 swimmers in the Fife squad.

Steven recorded 1:40.39 for 100m backstroke, 6:25.99 for 400m freestyle, 40.51 for 50m freestyle and 1:28.93 for 100m freestyle.

Kirsty swam 2:29.88 for 100m breaststroke, 52.23 for 50m freestyle and 1:57.26 for 100m freestyle.

A spokesman for DSF said following the event that swimming remained a high priority for the Kingdom organisation.

He said: “The retirement of Craig Rodgie and Craig Smith has reduced the number of swimmers eligible for this meet.

“DSF is however committed to bringing through new junior swimmers in the years ahead who will meet the qualifying criteria and excel for their local swimming clubs and the Fife team.”
