Open day ensures that membership grows

The club has made massive efforts in recent years to increase its membership from what it describes as “dangerously low levels”.

All those efforts have paid off, with the club in good health, but still refusing to rest on its laurels.

The recent open day was held to ensure membership numbers remain healthy and the club continues to be a prominent part of the local area.

A sports competition was held featuring bowls, darts, pool and putting for a £50 prize while other attractions also proved popular.

Some 1600 copies of a special newsletter were printed before the event and distributed during the fortnight leading up to the open day to all of the houses in the three villages that comprise the local community.

Every house received a newsletter.

A spokesman for the club said: “On the day of beautiful weather, at 12.00noon promptly, people began to arrive, many clutching a copy of the newsletter.

“By 4.00pm, when the event finished, we had signed up 64 adults and nine children.

“We simply could not believe it. We had thought that following our previous efforts we would do very well to get between six and 10 new people.

“Of course the really hard work is now just beginning.

“We have to organise and deliver coaching for a lot of people.

“We must make it interesting and a good experience for everyone.”
