OT win gives Flyers four-point opening weekend

Carl Finucci netted the killer goal which secured a 4-3 victory on the road.

His goal was the first to be scored using the new three-on-three OT format which is design to push teams to go for the winner rather than holding on for penalty shots.

The win came 24 hours after a polished 5-2 victory over Belfast Giants to give Flyers maximum returns from their opening Challenge Cup games – and set the new campaign alight.

They came from behind to finally defeat their great west coast rivals.

Craig Peacock fired Clan ahead in the opening period before Finucci teed up Shayne Stockton for a quick equaliser.

The teams were then tied at 2-2 after two periods – Scott Pitt and Sebastien Thinel found the net –before Ryan Dingle shot Fife head at 3-2.

Matt Beca’s game-tying goal took this game into sudden death overtime, and it was Finucci who sealed the deal with the winner to the delight of the big travelling support.

Todd Dutiaume, head coach, was delighted with the result and the performance.

‘@We have a great dressing room. The guys want to play for each other,’’ he said.

‘‘Braehead had us hemmed in for big parts of the first period and then we penalty killed for maybe 10-11 minutes in the second. They showed they cared.

‘‘A four-point weekend will only help to bring everyone closer.’’

Sunday’s win came on the back of a thrilling defeat of Belfast Giants in front of over 2500 fans at Fife Ice Arena.

Next weekend’s games see Flyers travel to Belfast on Saturday before making the long journey home to welcome Nottingham Panthers to Kirkcaldy.
