Lockdown prompted the schoolgirl to take up running for the first time in her life undertaking the ‘couch to 5km’ programme over the last two months.

The programme is a structured challenge that builds up from a five minute walk/ 8 x (1 min run, 90 secs walk) and 5 minute walk, gradually building up over nine weeks to a distance of 5km.

The Castlehill Primary School pupil who has been walking and running commented: “I’d done no running at all, I found it quite hard but I’ve gone longer and longer, it got hard again. I’ll keep going.”

Maggie’s challenge was to run 5km at the now cancelled Edinburgh Marathon Running Festival weekend but undeterred completed her 5km run last Saturday along the Kingask/Foxton trail.

Under glorious sunshine and supported by parents Fay and Calum, Maggie’s grit and determination carried her through to a commendable finish time of 38 minutes 48 seconds.

She arrived back at her Dalgairn home where she was roared on during the closing stages by family, friends and neighbours.

With Maggie’s fund now standing at £1320 she added: “I am really proud of myself and want to thank everyone for their support and their donations”

Looking ahead Maggie said: “I hope to keep on running, when things get back to normal, I could aim for a 5km parkrun.”

Maggie’s JustGiving page is still live at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/maggieduncan - all donations are appreciated.
