Former Olympian, councillor, and author, Don MacGregor, has died at the age of 80.

He was a highly respected figure in north-east Fife who also competed on the highest stage in sport.

Don represented the UK at the 1972 Olympic Games, where he finished seventh in the marathon. He also represented Scotland in the Commonwealth Games of 1974. His personal best time of of 2.14.16 still ranks 12th all time in Scotland.

Born in Edinburgh, he studied at the University of St Andrews, and served as a Liberal Democrat councillor on the old North East Fife District Council from 1988 to 1996. In 2007 he returned to local politics after being elected to Fife Council as one of the ward members for East Neuk and Landward ward

In 2010 he published his biography, Running My Life.
