Fifers target track finals double

When the stock car season hopefully gets underway at the Cowdenbeath Racewall, the stock rod drivers will have their eyes firmly focused on what could be a busy season for them.

There are hopes a full campaign can get into gear again when the sport is due to start in its regular early spring slot.

GMP should have hosted both the European and World Championships in 2020, but those were not run, and both should be on the fixture list for 2021.

An announcement on the fixture list should be announced in the near future.

Again, a lot is going to be down to the decisions of the government and its advisors on sport resuming safely.

The European title is held by Kincardine’s Stuart McKinnon, who also won the National Championship at the end of that season and, whilst he would like nothing more that to defend both titles, the world will be one of his priorities.

However, there are numerous other drivers who will have eyes on the double and amongst them is Kirkcaldy’s Michael Bethune.

Bethune was the World Champion in 2015 and was third in 2018 when both were held at the Racewall and he would like nothing better than to have the gold roof back on his car.

The present World Champion is Northern Ireland’s Jack Kennedy who won the title at Nutts Corner in 2019.

Most of the other Fife based drivers will be eyeing up qualifying for both championship and they include Stuart Wedderburn (Leven), Steve Gunby (Cupar), Sandy Allen (Methil), Scott and Sandy Galbraith (Auchtermuchty), Neil Gilogley (Tayport) and David Dignan (Leven).

The other championship that the drivers will be keen to win is the Scottish Championship which is normally run towards the end of the season in October.

Last year Bethune won it in a thrilling race but, with it being a drawn grid, a lot depends on where the drivers start.
