Golfers still welcome at courses but being urged by trust to put safety first

St Andrews Links Trust says it’s delighted its courses are remaining open but it is reminding golfers of their safety responsibilities.

Courses are allowed to remain available for play following Scotland’s move into level-four Covid-19 restrictions, but after they were shut during lockdown, golfers know how quickly that luxury can be taken away again.

To make sure everyone is able to continue to enjoy the sport, the trust, which manages seven courses across the town, including the Old Course, says it’s crucial those using the facilities have safety and hygiene at the forefront of their minds.

A spokesman said: “We continue to undertake a number of measures to ensure the safety of our colleagues and golfers.

“We would like to thank you for your consistent co-operation and adherence to the current guidance and ask that you continue to play your part during these challenging times.

“Please help us in ensuring our courses and facilities can provide a safe environment at this time.”

The trust has provided an extensive list of its safety guidance on its website at standrews.com

Amongst it is a reminder of travel restrictions within level four areas and a message for those hoping to play that all rounds must be booked before hand.

It states: “In level four, you are not permitted to drive outside your local authority area for exercise, but you can cross boundaries in the process of exercising, for example if a golf course straddles two local authority area boundaries.”

All golfers should be aware of travel guidance outlined by the Scottish Government and this should always be followed.

Extensive safety measures are still being taken at the trust’s courses to ensure those playing remain protected.

The statement adds: “During this time, we have undertaken a number of measures to ensure the safety of our colleagues and golfers.

“Please help us ensuring our courses and facilities can provide a safe environment at this time.

“Please do not come to any of the courses if you are showing Covid-19 symptoms.”

Currently no locker room or changing facilities are available in any clubhouse and there is access for toilets only.

Before the country moved into level four, Scottish Golf, the governing body for the sport in the country also issued wider, extensive guidance to golfers.

As well as the previously-stated information on travel and on course safety, golfers were also reminded that outdoor driving ranges can remain open for use.

Outdoor coaching is permitted but groups must not exceed 30.

Club shops will close but are invited to use a click-and-collect system for any purchases.
