Current circumstances knocked that largely on the head but, thankfully, the summer isn’t going to be a complete write off.

An easing of coronavirus restrictions means that clubs can get together and play games amongst each other safely.

Falkland Cricket Club is wasting no time in dusting off their bats and stumps and plan to get out again this weekend.

On Saturday Falkland will stage an intra-club match amongst the club’s own players under strict safety guidelines.

Club president Robbie Nellies admit’s it’s been a long route back - but is delighted that finally the club will see some sport again.

He said: “It’s been a frustrating few months for the club with training only permitted to start from July 7 and then with a maximum of three people.

“Following the Scottish Government’s Phase 3 announcement training numbers have been increased but still with strict safety measures in place.

“All competitive cricket has been cancelled this season but there is hope that friendlies can be played from the beginning of August, that is if the expected go ahead is given.

“Junior cricket has also been badly affected but the good news is that coaching across all age groups has restarted this week again with restrictions in place.”

While on lockdown the club did its bit in the community with members delivering groceries to locals.

A number of members also joined Falkland Golf Club providing a boost to their membership.

The cricket club’s own membership has also received a boost, as Mr Nellies revealed, saying: “A beer garden has been opened recently at Scroggie Park which has proved to be an outstanding success. Primarily intended to bring those associated with the club back together it has also resulted in over 50 new members joining.”

The club was due to celebrate it’s 160th anniversary this year which included a week of cricket and an exhibition which has all been cancelled and will be rearranged in 2021.
