Phoenix Cup will give golfers memories to last a lifetime

The competition, created by Scottish Disability Golf, is the disabled version of the Ryder/Solheim cups and, in regular circumstances would have seen European players compete against American counterparts.

The obvious travel restirctions this year meant that wasn’t possible, despite organisers’ best efforts, but a replacement competition was able to be played out.

Over Gleneagles PGA Centenary, Panmure, Blairgowrie, Carnoustie Championship and Trump International courses, a Great Britain and Ireland side faced a European team over a week in what became the 25th and 26th runnings of the cup.

Europe won the 25th Phoenix Cup and Great Britain and Ireland won the 26th, over the prestigious links, heathland and parkland golf courses in glorious Scottish sunshine.

Adam Storrie of Fauldhouse and Jim Gales of Springfield, co-Ccptained the Great Britain & Ireland team and by winning the 26th Phoenix Cup are the current holders.

They said: “What a great opportunity for our members and friends to play such fantastic courses.

“Even the weather held up for us and to finish with a wee victory on the likes of Carnoustie and Trump courses, we are well chuffed and its just something to treasure for the rest of our golfing days.

“Over 30 of our disabled members got to play during the week long golf competition and it is undoubtedly a great boost for our charities profile.”

an Early Day Motion submitted by North East Fife MP, Wendy Chamberlain gave its approval and support to the Phoenix Cup. St Andrews’ Old and Jubilee courses will host the cup next.
