A quiet affair as Kirkcaldy Bowling Club re-opens

Kirkcaldy Bowling Club opened up on Monday for its 162nd season under less than normal circumstances.

Opening day in 2019 had beautiful blue skies and more than 50 players on the green with many more spectating, but 2020 saw the club opening the green only, with significant restrictions and routines in place in line with the Phase 1 Lockdown relaxations.

However, there were few complaints with honorary secretary John Nylk saying: “We should consider ourselves very lucky to be in the privileged position of being one of the first sports the Scottish Government has included as part of its extended exercise programme and it is critical that we continue to adhere to the guidance provided.”

He added: “Bowls Scotland, with whom we are affiliated, made it clear that there was absolutely no urgency to return to the green, and although our members have had enough of lockdown and are missing socialising though bowls, our priority was to ensure safety of our members and volunteers first.”

Relaxations at the club include an advance booking only system for rinks, alternate rinks being kept clear, a one way system around the club grounds, introducing a cleaning and drying station for mats and jacks, keeping the locker Rooms, clubhouse and toilets closed, no spectators and no competitions.

“Being part of KBC is not just about playing bowls, there is also a significant social and community element,” John said.

“Unfortunately the final three social evenings of the 2019 season had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

“A lot of members used their own club network to keep in touch with each other over the weeks and months, and assist with any difficulties.

“Others kept in contact with some of our shielding members for a chat, catch up and company.

“We now look forward to further and future relaxations with each one bringing us closer to what our members know bowling, hospitality and socialising at KBC can and should be.”
