Scottish Golf mourns the passing of past president, Malcolm Mitchell

Scottish Golf has led the tributes to its immediate past president, Malcolm M Mitchell.

Mr Mitchell, a St Andrean, who was a past captain of The New Club in St Andrews and a former PGA Scottish Region Secretary, passed away following a short illness.

Karin Sharp, chief operating officer of Scottish Golf said: “On behalf of everyone at Scottish Golf, I would like to extend our condolences to Malcolm’s family and friends from across the game at this sad time. Malcolm was a great servant of the game and a proud ambassador in his role as president and will be sadly missed by those who knew him.”

Mr Mitchell was Scottish Golf’s first Fife president and told this title shortly after his appointment he considered it a “great honour” for himself, the New Golf Club, St Andrews and the Kingdom itself.

In addition to starting The Tartan Tour, Malcolm introduced a number of innovations including the PGA Scottish dinner, the patrons’ scheme, training seminars for assistants and obtained TV coverage for the PGA Scottish Championship.

He was a made a life member of the Scottish Golf Union in 1977 for services to golf in Scotland.
