Davies was no stranger to the Kingdom track, having twice won the Banger World Cup.

His first encounter with the track was back in 1983 when he and his family headed north to watch his father, Steve, race his saloon stock car in the World Final, a race won by Gordon Brown.

Little did he know he would go on to compete at the Racewall every year between 1999 and 2017 when he retired.

“I started racing junior bangers in 1993 at Dover but, when I moved into the unlimited bangers, we headed to the Racewall in 1999 for our first taste of the World Cup,” he said.

"Our team included my brother Andy and our pals and we would leave Gravesend on Thursday morning and book into a hotel that night ready for Saturday.

"We all really enjoyed the World Cup meetings.

"The atmosphere was something else and the more often we appeared the better the reception our team got.

"We used to dress up for the parade lap which helped to get the crowd going.

"The track surface is good and the racing is very fast.

“I was world champion in 2005 and 2011 but by then I had decided to switch to the two litre saloons.

“My last weekend racing in the saloons was the Superbowl towards the end of October 2017 and there was the usual impressive turn out of cars.

"I did alright in the heats and started the final on the outside of the front row.

"This time I got away well and tucked in behind the leader and survived the action on the opening lap.

"Early on I took the lead but was soon to have Luke Grief challenging me. Grief did get ahead but during the last few laps I was able to send him wide before going through to win.

“I was absolutely delighted to have won a big event at the Racewall. The atmosphere was something else – it was great memory for me.

“I remember my last race at the Racewall the following day. I think I was clattered off the wall at nearly every bend. What a finish.”
