St Andrews makes the call to postpone games

This now means all seven of the Fife games which are members of the Scottish Highland Games Association (SHGA) have now been cancelled owing to the uncertainty of the Covic-19 pandemic.T

he games at Markinch, Cupar, Ceres, Thornton, Burntisland and Inverkeithing had already been called off for this year.

St Andrews games secretary Ian Grieve posted on their website,

“The St Andrews Highland Games committee met at the weekend by video conferencing and took the difficult decision to cancel this year’s event due to be held on Sunday 26th July.

“The health, safety and wellbeing of all our guests, competitors, and officials has to be our number one priority, so it is only right for us to cancel this year.

“We know this is disappointing news, but we thank you whole heartedly for your support, and look forward to welcoming you all back next year, when our games will be held on Sunday 25th July.”

In total 46 of the 60 SHGA member games have now been called off and there has been verbal indication that others will follow in the coming days.

St Andrews Highland games are relative newcomers to the scene and this year was scheduled to be only the 36th time they would have been held.

From humble beginings in 1984 the were first held on a Thursday afternoon in a field on the outskirts of St Andrews, courtesey of Mrs Cheape of Strathtrum Estate.
