Success for Bethune behind closed doors at Cowdenbeath Racewall

In a year where the Covid-19 virus dominated the headlines there was still some stock car racing able to take place at the Cowdenbeath Racewall, writes Jim Turner.

However, despite some excellent displays by the drivers over the course of the season, there was only one meeting that was able to place in front of spectators.

That was at the beginning of the season, in early March, but before the second meeting the country went into lockdown, meaning any further driving had to take place behind closed doors and adhere to restrictions.

One driver to stand out despite the lack off spectators was Michael Bethune from Kirkcaldy, who works in the family business at Thornton.

Michael, who drives an ORCi Stock Rod has a whole list of honours to his name in the sport including being the World Champion in 2015 and is also the present Scottish Champion.

During the closed door sessions he had many a close and exciting dices with Cammy Doak, picking up his fair share of success.

His best outing was during the Stock Rods last outing of the season where he started off with an opening heat win and then followed that up with second places in the second heat and the final. To round off the season he went on to win the Allcomers.

Michael will be hoping for a full season’s racing in 2021, which is the 40th season of stock car racing under the GMP banner, and what better way to celebrate that than to win the World Championship which incidentally is being staged at the Racewall.
