Town racer hoping for a busy 2021

The classic hot rods bring back a lot of memories to the spectators who visit the stock car ovals, remembering the days gone by when Ford Escorts dominated the hot rod racing.

Amongst the drivers racing in Scotland is MB Motors garage proprietor Martin Balfour who has a 100E and recently took on a Mk2 Escort.

Martin, who lives in Glenrothes, admitted he was pleased to at least get some racing under his belt last season after the impact Covid-19 had on the sport.

He said: “We were all ready for the start of the season and making plans of what meetings we were going to attend when Covid-19 stepped in.

“The car then sat in the garage until the end of August when there was a meeting that I could attend down at Aldershot.

“I started the first race from the back of the white grade at a track that I had never been to.

“I finished the race in eleventh but then ended up in fourth place in the second heat and repeated the same result in the final. I couldn’t have been happier. The car had run well and there was no damage to the car.

“My next meeting didn’t last too long when I was in a shunt in the first heat and that was that.

“The car was back in the workshop and we soon had the damage repaired and the car is ready to go.

“I decided when John McFarlane’s Mk2 Escort came up for sale that I would buy it.

“My plan is to see how both the cars run so it could be that we use the Escort on the longer tracks and the 100E on the short ovals but it is going to be a case of trial and error. Hopefully I will be able to get a full season’s racing in 2021.”
