Outstanding Ollie is on top form

The championships, organised by Scottish Disability Sport, saw the Bell Baxter HS teenager, who swims for Carnegie Swimming Club, contest five individual open events and won all five, setting three Scottish junior championships records in the process.

All of Scotland’s leading S10 and S9 physically disabled swimmers have at one time competed in the same events as Ollie.

Ollie is three fifths of the way to a clean sweep of junior records following his performances at the 2016 Championships.

His championships began with the 100 metres individual medley where he set a new record of 1:09.44, almost a three second improvement on the record set by Robert Dalgleish back in 2012.

The 50 metres backstroke was his second event and he won the race comfortably but on this occasion around two seconds outside the Scottish record of 31.96.

After lunch Ollie returned to record ways with a 50 metres butterfly swim in 31.83.

The penultimate event for Ollie was 50 metres breast stroke where he swam 37.81, just 0.4 of a second outside the Scottish Junior Championship record set by Paralympian Iain Matthew from Fife in 1993.

Iain was a specialist breaststroke swimmer who won gold in 100 metres breast stroke at the Paralympic Games in Barcelona in 1992.

A championships record for 100 metres freestyle of 1.00.03 completed a magnificent day of swimming.

This young Fife teenager has now swam faster in 100 IM, 100 free and 50 metres butterfly than any other physically disabled Scottish junior swimmer since the Championships were first held back in Glenrothes in 1976.

Cameron Hemphill from Cupar and District SC won gold in breaststroke and silver in backstroke and freestyle.
