Club sides had hoped to take to the field again in January to kick off a delayed season, brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the governing body this week announced that, due to the on-going prevalence of the pandemic, it had taken the decision to abandon any competitive club or school games until the end of the regular season in spring 2021.

Glenrothes remian sympathetic and supportive to the difficulty Scottish Rugby faced to try and organise the sport to return safely. But the club added it would still try to offer some sort of outlet for its players despite there being no games to look forward to.

A club spokesman said: “As a club we are disappointed in the decision to cancel this season but recognise that the SRU is probably bowing to the inevitable.

“Training will continue as we have great numbers taking part and a lot of dedicated volunteers.

Sport has an important part to play in physical and mental well being and we are lucky that we can still help with this.

“We are hopeful that as we move into spring there will be opportunities for friendly fixtures at all levels of the club.”

Scottish Rugby says that, with the current public health guidelines in place, full contact training and non-competitive (friendly) matches cannot be resumed, resulting in the vast majority of players being unable to fully and safely prepare for competitive matches in the new year as previously intended.

The current government regulations also continue to limit the ability of clubs to travel to games.
