Ex-Howe of Fife pair return to club to promote £15,000 revamp fund

Former Howe of Fife players George and Peter Horne have been signed up to help promote a new grant scheme offering Scottish rugby clubs shares in a £15,000 kitty to spend on doing up their clubhouses.

Called the Characterful Clubhouse Fund, it’s been launched by whisky brand the Famous Grouse together with Scottish Rugby and offers a handout of £10,000 to one winner to spend on a clubhouse revamp, with a further £2,500 apiece going to two runners-up.

Entrants are asked to explain what makes their clubhouses special, how they bring people together and what they would spend any money they won on.

Entries are open until the end of next Tuesday, November 3, and the winners will be announced later next month.

Olaf Gueldner, chief customer officer at Scottish Rugby, said: “We’re delighted to be working with the Famous Grouse on the Characterful Clubhouse Fund campaign to recognise the people and places that make grass-roots rugby what it is.

“Our rugby clubs are at the heart of their communities across Scotland and their clubhouses play an important role in bringing players, volunteers and supporters together.

“We look forward to seeing the entries from across Scotland and hearing the stories behind them.”

Karen Daly, marketing manager for the William Grant and Sons-produced whisky, added: “For generations, rugby clubhouses have been at the heart of so many communities across Scotland.

“They’re places where people come together to celebrate, volunteer, share stories and support their clubs.

“Through the Characterful Clubhouse Fund, we want to recognise the contribution local rugby clubs make on and off the pitch.

“We’re really looking forward to hearing the stories that make each clubhouse unique and helping clubs invest in spaces that can continue serving their communities for years to come.”

Scotland and Glasgow Warriors scrum-half George Horne, 31, and his elder brother Peter, 37, now an assistant coach with the national men’s team, returned to Howe’s Duffus Park ground in Cupar to film a video promoting the fund – featuring club legend David Rollo – and the latter said: “I think the Characterful Clubhouse Fund would be great for loads of clubs.

“We’ve got so much out of the clubhouse that we kind of grew up in, it being a real social hub, and sometimes a little boost in terms of investment like that is all a club would need to get a new lease of life.”
