Runners lace up for Stuart's memorial 5k

Around 130 serious and novice runners came together to complete the 5km route through Glenrothes and boosted the coffers of a national charity in the process.

A keen amateur runner, Stewart passed away in April last year and to mark his memory and the sport that he loved, the family set up the race which is hoped will become an annual event in the town.

“The support has been overwhelming and generosity has been overwhelming,“ Stuart’s widow Margaret told the Gazette.

“We increased the number of those taking part this year but still had to limit it to 130, I think we’ll need to see if we can work out a way of expanding it further for 2017 because of the numbers already asking about next years race,” she added.

This year every person who crossed the finishing line was awarded a medal and there were trophies for the first male and female in the race proper.

Fastest male time was clocked by Colin Sommerville (PH Racing Club) in a time of 16min 49 sec with Mary Western (PH Racing Club) taking the female trophy in a time of 19min 16 sec.

£825 raised from the race is to be donated to the Chest Heart and Stroke (Scotland) charity.
